Biography

Dr. Robert (Rob) Dalton is an assistant professor in landscape architecture. After earning his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (2011) and Master of Environmental Design (2013) at Michigan State University, he continued on to his Ph.D. in planning, design and construction at Michigan State University (2016). He was a nontenure hire for one year at MSU, working as both a researcher with a student and faculty team and teaching courses across the Landscape Architecture and graduate level curricula.
Following his academic experience, Dalton worked in private practice across Illinois and Michigan. His roles included design and construction documentation, estimating, project management, consulting, land-use planning, nonmotorized transportation systems, and parks, playgrounds and plazas. During this time, he had the opportunity to also teach as an online adjunct across multiple computer graphic software.
Beginning at SDSU in fall 2022, Dalton joined the SDSU School of Design in the landscape architecture program. His courses have included teaching digital drafting, hand graphics, site inventory and analysis, public space design, community design, recreation design and travel studies. His research and creative works concern community development, including brownfield development, community participation, cognitive mapping, walkable design and downtown developments. He has also conducted research and published since graduate school on the efficacy of studio pedagogy. Dalton is an active member with the American Society of Landscape Architects, Council of Educators of Landscape Architects, and a working group chair of the International Federation of Landscape Architects and the South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã region chair of the Future City competition.
