Division of Research and Economic Development
The Division of Research and Economic Development supports competitive and strategic research, scholarship and creative activity in our mission as a land-grant university. The university's research profile covers a range of disciplines, including agriculture, engineering, remote sensing, life sciences, nursing, pharmacy and the arts and humanities. Our researchers collaborate with partners in academia, industry and the community to find solutions to pressing challenges and support South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã's economic development.
R1 Our Way
SDSU's extensive research profile uniquely positions it to bolster South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã's economic growth and well-being. To grow its research enterprise and transform the South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã economy for generations to come, SDSU is pursuing R1 classification, as defined by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
To achieve R1 classification, the university must meet two clear benchmarks:
- $50 million in annual research expenditures
- 70 doctoral degrees awarded annually (calculated using a three-year running average)
