Alumni on the Move: Xianhui 'Andy' Zhao

Xianhui Zhao

Originally from China, Xianhui “Andy” Zhao has built an impressive career in research and innovation since earning his Ph.D. in agricultural, biosystems and mechanical engineering from South ֱ State University in 2015. He now resides in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he continues to advance renewable energy technologies as a research and development staff scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Zhao’s professional journey began with a postdoctoral scholar position at the University of South Florida (2016-2018) before moving to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he progressed from postdoctoral research associate to research and development associate staff scientist and now research and development staff scientist. Reflecting on his path, Zhao noted, “SDSU’s graduate program trained me to approach complex problems creatively and systematically. The friendly research environment taught me how to design experiments, analyze data, write papers and present research. That training has been invaluable for communicating with a variety of audiences.”

One of his proudest accomplishments is leading a project that improves the economic viability of the biofuel industry by adding a high-value revenue stream for biomass supply chains. His team developed a patented technology that fractionates biomass material according to ash content — an advancement that supports the production of sustainable aviation fuel while also creating opportunities for high-value biomaterials. “This work not only advanced my research area but also created opportunities for collaboration across disciplines,” he shared.

Beyond his research, Zhao finds fulfillment in mentoring the next generation of scholars and professionals. “Seeing students I’ve mentored go on to successful careers — such as graduate school at Princeton or positions in industry — has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey.” He also contributes his expertise to the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, helping bridge academic research with industry applications.

When he’s not in the lab, Zhao enjoys family time — whether that’s playing tennis with his wife, basketball with his son or pickleball with his daughter.

Looking back, he is deeply grateful for his SDSU experience, particularly the support of faculty, advisors and the O’Neil family, who made Brookings feel like home. “Graduate school is not just about the degree. Graduate school teaches resilience. It’s about building a network of people who will support you, challenge you and often become lifelong collaborators. Enjoy every stage of life, because each one has a different meaning.”
