Current Student Travel FAQs

During their studies, students often inform us that they are going home to renew their visa…

Our response is always the following:

“Are you headed home to see friends and family and eat great food – AND while you are home, renew your visa at the same time?  Or were you thinking that you needed to return home because your visa is about to or has recently expired?”

If the only reason a student is planning to return home is because they thought they needed to renew their visa, there is no need to return home.

A student’s visa is an entry document only. This means that as long as the student has a valid I-20 or DS-2019, it does not matter whether the visa has expired. They are completely okay to remain in the U.S. with an expired visa.
