Brodkorb named March’s Civil Service Employee of the Month

Miranda Brodkorb, a communications specialist for the South ֱ State University Police Department, has been named SDSU’s Civil Service Employee of the Month for March.
She will be honored at a reception held from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, at the University Police Department.
Brodkorb has worked at SDSU for the past six years, joining the UPD in 2019.
Timothy Heaton, chief of the University Police Department, said that Brodkorb is well organized, ultra reliable, personable and an excellent dispatcher.
“She is self-motivated, public-safety focused and a proven performer with years of service to both UPD and South ֱ State,” Heaton said.
In the past few years, Brodkorb has also become a certified police telecommunication trainer, assisting in policy management, new staff development and customer service, he added.
Michael Kilber, deputy chief of the University Police Department, said Brodkorb is one of the best police dispatchers in the field, and she possesses essential qualities and skills that enable her to excel in this critical role.
“I have known, worked with and directly supervised Miranda for several years and have been consistently impressed by her performance on the job and her ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Miranda’s strong work ethic and dedication to the public safety mission of the SDSU Police Department have allowed her to become a key member of our communications division and an asset for the entire institution.”
Brodkorb demonstrates compassion, empathy and professionalism with callers, remains calm under pressure, and balances instinct and organization to make quick decisions and exercise sound and effective judgement, Kilber added.
Kaitlyn Oleson-Hayen, communications supervisor for the UPD Communications Division, said Brodkorb does everything she can to make sure UPD officers have as much information as possible when responding to calls and seeks out extra resources to ensure their safety.
“Miranda regularly displays a high level of commitment and service. … She continually goes above and beyond to provide the public and others in law enforcement with the information they need to complete their duties and achieve their goals. She thrives in high-stress situations where most others would struggle, which provides the SDSU community with the best possible resources in times of need,” she said.
Brodkorb moved to Brookings in 2017 after graduating from T.F Riggs High School in 2016. When not working, she can be found spending time outside and traveling with her fiancé, their 15-month-old daughter, Tasia, and 9-year-old son, Jeremiah; spending time with their families, or at home with their two dogs and two cats, reading, doing puzzles, playing video games and cooking together.
“I am so thankful and surprised to be nominated and accepted for this award. Thank you to my family, who has unconditionally supported me over the last six years,” Brodkorb said. “I appreciate the University Police Department and everyone who works there for making such a wonderful work environment that makes coming to work every day enjoyable and something to look forward to.”
All SDSU Employee of the Month selections are determined through a nomination process by the Civil Service Advisory Council. Each civil service employee of the month receives an appreciation monetary gift from the F.O. Butler Foundation. The trustees of the foundation recognize the importance of civil service employees and take this opportunity to thank them for their exemplary service.
