The Daschle Dialogues speaking series returns Oct. 27, when author and educator Sharon McMahon comes to South ֱ State University.

The No. 1 New York Times best-selling author of “The Small and the Mighty” earned McMahon the title of “America’s Government Teacher” during the 2020 election by going viral for breaking down complex topics with a steadfast commitment to the facts.

With equal parts levity and gravitas, McMahon has attracted a community of millions of followers — affectionately called the “Governerds.” She is founder of a publication, The Preamble, which is dedicated to nonpartisan political insights.

Tickets for McMahon’s presentation at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center became publicly available starting Oct. 6. There is no cost for the event; however, tickets are required for admission. There is a limit of two tickets per person.

The Daschle Dialogues series is funded through an endowment created by private donors in honor of Sen. Tom Daschle, a 1969 SDSU graduate who served as Senate majority and minority leader during a 26-year career in Congress. The Thomas A. Daschle Congressional Research Study at SDSU is the repository for all of Daschle’s official papers.

Sen. Daschle’s son, Nathan, will represent his father at the Oct. 27 event.

“We are thrilled to welcome Sharon McMahon to SDSU as part of the Daschle Dialogues series. Her ability to distill complex political and historical topics into accessible, engaging conversations aligns perfectly with our mission to foster informed and engaged citizens,” said Christine Garst-Santos, director of the School of American and Global Studies at SDSU. “Sharon’s dedication to clarity, truth and civic education makes her an ideal guest to inspire students and community members alike.”

The Mike Huether Public Service Academy, which exists within the School of American and Global Studies, is partnering with Daschle Dialogues for this event.

Daschle Dialogues is the public series that brings national figures and thought leaders to South ֱ. Past featured guests include former Republican Senate Leader Trent Lott, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Beyond education, McMahon leads philanthropic initiatives that have raised more than $11 million to address critical needs, from medical debt relief to disaster recovery. She inspires audiences with a message of hope: history shows us that even small actions can create powerful change.
