2025 Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Rally and Marade
  • Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Club 71 of the Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium

Please join us on Jan. 20 for the third annual Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Rally and Marade. This year's theme is "Mission Possible." From 10-11:30 a.m., there will be speeches and musical performances from SDSU students, alumni and leadership. Jahmal Cole, founder and CEO of My Block My Hood My City and social justice advocate, will also present the keynote speech. The "marade" (march and parade) will occur from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. This mile-long walk will be outside if weather permits, so dress accordingly. To wrap up the event, there will be heavy hors d'oeuvres and an opportunity for socialization from 12:15-1 p.m.

What is a 'marade'?

A 'marade' is a combination of march and parade. It typically includes a large public procession, with a rally and marching band. Often festive in nature, this event is held in honor of the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Rally and Marade

  • Monday, Feb. 19, 2024, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Volstorff Ballroom

On President's Day (rescheduled due to weather), we celebrated the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. This event included student and university speakers and a keynote from the Rev. France Davis, a prominent civil rights activist. Additionally, there was a "marade" (march and parade), where attendees participated in a 1-mile outdoor walk across campus to recognize the importance of the civil rights movement. Following the marade, appetizers and warm beverages were provided.

CommUNITY Meeting

  • Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, from 10:30 a.m.-noon, in the Pheasant Crest Room

The Rev. France Davis, a prominent member of the civil rights movement, spoke on his experiences as an African American participating in the civil rights movement. There was a Q&A session between Davis and the audience following this informative presentation.

2023 Event

Inaugural Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Rally and Marade – 2023

On Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, we hosted the inaugural Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Rally and Marade. The celebration was held in the SDSU University Student Union and included speakers, performances and a marade. We honored the life and legacy of King as a "Day On, Not a Day Off."

The event was a collaboration between the Brookings Human Rights Commission, Visit Brookings, the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Accessibility, the American Indian Student Center, the Students' Association Senate and the following student organizations: Black Student Alliance, Latin American Student Association, Gender and Sexualities Alliance and International Dance Crew.

King's inspiration endures, and we are excited to host the second annual MLK Jr. Rally and Marade on Jan. 15, 2024. Everyone is welcome, and the event will be bigger and better than the first.
