Power for beauty, for change, for hope. Power to help us remember, grow, connect, enliven. The English major with a writing specialization involves literature, linguistics and writing coursework. Students receive a well-rounded background in literature, but with more intensive work in creative and/or professional writing. This program serves students seeking careers in creative or professional writing. The major offers flexibility and can easily be added to another major.

This program will be a good fit if you:

  • Enjoy studying literature, literary criticism and language studies.
  • Are a strong reader and writer.
  • Are interested in history and culture, especially as they relate to the study of narrative.
  • Are eager for an intellectual challenge—both creatively and technically.
  • Are self-motivated, goal-oriented, and work well independently.

The exploratory studies program may be a good fit if you are unsure of your major and career focus. Entering the university in the exploratory studies program will help you gain confidence and valuable insights on majors and minors available at SDSU and future career choices.  

In addition, , a self-guided assessment, education and career planning program, will help you reflect on your values, interests, personality traits and skills to provide valuable insight as you explore major and career choices.
