Fertilizer Distribution Machinery Project

5/26

In the early 1950s, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Fertilizer Distribution Machinery Project in Beltsville, Maryland and Utah State Agricultural College conducted experiments with fertilizer delivery systems. The museum has a small collection of photographs and correspondence between South ֱ State University Agricultural Experiment Station scientist Lawrence O. Fine and James Hardman of Utah State Agricultural College concerning the fertilizer hoppers. These photos are interesting because the museum collection contains 2 Allis-Chalmers “G” tractors that were used by SDSU Agricultural Experiment station in the early 1950s. Neither tractor has fertilizer hoppers attached. This Allis-Chalmers “G” tractor has leucite fertilizer hoppers attached to it. They are mounted on the body of the tractor and sit slightly in front of the driver. The hoppers employed a belt type dispensing mechanism that swept the fertilizer into the delivery tubes, which are not visible in this photograph. Extra hardware had to be ordered from Allis-Chalmers to mount the hoppers on the tractor.
