The ADRDL Histology Laboratory section primarily provides support to the veterinary pathologists in the ADRDL by producing high quality, stained tissue sections for microscopic evaluation. Microscopic evaluation of tissues significantly contributes to successful and accurate disease diagnoses in veterinary species. Testing capabilities of the laboratory include routine H&E staining along with many special stains and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Special stains are used to identify specific tissue types, some intracellular and extracellular products, and certain infectious pathogens. IHC is used to identify infectious pathogens within formalin-fixed tissues and to identify populations of cells based on specific cell surface markers.

General Guidelines

To ensure quality slide production, tissues should be fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin at the time of collection to maintain tissue integrity and should measure no more than 2-3 cm³ to allow optimal fixation. Formalin-fixed tissues should not be frozen.
