SDSU experts to share crop, management practice research at Northeast Research Farm Field Day

All things agronomy will be the focus of the Northeast Research Farm Field Day next month. Everyone is invited to hear about the latest research from South ֱ State University on Thursday, July 10, from 4 p.m. to dusk at 15710 455th Ave., South Shore.
With a cooler climate than other research stations, the Northeast Research Farm has a broad focus on small grains, although a wide variety of crops and agronomic practices are being tested on its 105 acres. Many multiyear projects take place at the farm, allowing researchers the opportunity to observe how crops respond to various management techniques over time. Those researchers will be the ones presenting at the field day.
“A lot of times farmers get a chance to listen to experts at different meetings, but this time they get to have real interactions with the researchers,” David Karki, manager of the Northeast Research Farm, said. “We are thrilled to have our field day provide this platform. I hope (farmers) leave with great interactions with SDSU researchers who are doing the work and conducting the research.”
Topics for the field day, and their respective experts, are:
- Tar spot in corn – Madalyn Shires
- Insect pest update – Adam Varenhorst
- Small grain variety tour – , Karl Glover, Melanie Caffe
- Soil fertility update on corn – Jason Clark
- Nutrient stratification on topsoil –
- Weed management –
- Planting date and maturity group effects on soybean – David Karki
Karki will also take the field day as an opportunity to talk with local producers about future research on the farm.
“We will have farmers from different counties, our advisory board and members of industry in the room, so it will be a great opportunity to showcase our research and also hear from people from around the region,” Karki said. “The discussions we have at our annual field day help us take guidance from stakeholders and prioritize future research.”
is open. While not required, registration is encouraged as dinner will be provided for attendees.
The Northeast Research Farm Field Day is a South ֱ Agricultural Experiment Station research station. This field day is one of six hosted by the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences taking place across the state of South ֱ, with each presenting research conducted locally and of interest to local farmers.
