David Reynolds and Friends to present ‘Monuments in Brass'

The South ֱ State University School of Performing Arts will present David Reynolds and Friends in a concert of brass ensemble music slated for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center’s Founders Recital Hall.
The concert is titled “Monuments in Brass,” as the entirety of the program features music for a small group of brass instruments. A highlight of the program will be the premier of Reynolds’ work, “The Journey,” which is based on a famous painting depicting the 19th century hornist Emmanuel Rio. Another work to be featured is a march by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Hummel, a contemporary of Beethoven, wrote the piece in 1795, but the work has essentially been lost to the ages until rediscovery in the British Library earlier this summer.
Additional selections include a masterwork for brass quintet, the lighthearted “Quintet for Brass” by British-born composer Malcolm Arnold, and a Bossa by Amparo Edo Biol.
Performing in the program with Reynolds are several SDSU music faculty as well as nonresident musicians Mark Nelson from the South ֱ Symphony Orchestra and Washington, D.C.-based trombonist Scott Shelsta. Nonresident musicians appear through support provided by the Patricia Pierce Visiting Artist Endowment.
The recital is free, and the public is invited to attend.
