First Responder Support Training Center

Lab Focus

Our First Responders Support Training Center is committed to enhancing health and wellness for first responders across the state. The First Responders Support Training Center is excited to share updates on our three-year Federal Emergency Management Agency research grant aimed at supporting volunteer firefighters. We are proud to introduce our center's director, assistant professor Allison Barry, and her dedicated team.

Aims

Aim 1 – Current Infrastructure

Current phase: Conduct a needs analysis through a digital survey to understand the fire department culture: membership, training processes, health programs, feasibility of health program initiation and barriers to health program implementation.

Aim 2 – Focus Groups

Building on the findings from Aim 1, we will conduct focus groups with firefighters and fire chiefs to gather input and further explore the feasibility and implementation of health programs. These discussions will enable the research team and fire service stakeholders to develop a practical strategic plan to improve physical activity and nutrition.

Aim 3 – Implementation

Building on the themes identified in Aims 1 and 2, and in collaboration with the South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã Fire Service, we will implement a newly developed strategic plan to enhance physical activity and nutrition across the state's fire service. This plan will incorporate lessons learned and key insights, serving as a road map for other departments to adopt physical activity and nutritional guidance, promoting healthier firefighters.
